Introduction to Chinese Traditional Festival - Spring Festival

As a country with one of the longest histories in the world, China has lots of traditional festivals, such as Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, etc. This article is going to talk about Spring Festival in China shortly.
Spring Festival which known as Chinese New Year is the most important festival in China. People clean their house before the Spring Festival which called ‘Sao Chen’ in Chinese. It means to sweep out all poor luck and bad luck. Nowadays, people watch Spring Festival gala evening on TV every year. Setting off firecrackers is on of the most important event during Spring Festival. There is a story that explains the reason of it.
Long time ago, there was a monster called Nian. It was very huge and fierce. Every Chinese New Year's Eve, it would come out from the mountains to the village and eat humans. One year, people heard that Nian was scared of red and firecrackers. Thus, people started to set off firecrackers, wear red clothes, and paste red antithetical couplet, also stay up all night with lights on. Since then, Nian never came again.
As a result, setting off firecrackers, wearing red clothes, pasting red antithetical couplet and staying up have become a custom coming down. Red is regarded as the representative colour of China as well.
On Chinese new year's eve, family numbers will come together and have dinner together. After dinner people will also eat dumplings. On the first day of Spring Festival, people will wear new clothes. For the next fews day, people will visit their families, friends and colleagues.
